Orientation to Scouting
This development opportunity for all new adult volunteers to Scouting provides an
understanding to the guiding principles, organizational structure, the Section's program,
the Scout Uniform, badges and awards, fundraising, and the traditions and history of
Scouting. This Introduction to Scouting will outline where help is available, the role of
the Service Scouter, Area Council, and the obligations of the Group Committee to the
Section Leaders and vice-versa. This mandatory volunteer development is offered at the
local area so please check with your Group Chairperson for opportunities to participate.
Workshop duration is three hours. Workshop Fee No Charge
Group Committee Workshop
Group Committee members
learn about management and administrative processes that support the delivery of Scouting
programs. Topics include role and function, volunteer screening, effective meetings,
finances and fundraising, recognition, camping and special events. An Orientation to
Scouting course is a prerequisite to the remaining modules of the Group Committee
Workshop. Workshop duration is eight hours.
Workshop Fee No Charge, Bring a Bag Lunch
Basic Training for Colony,
Pack and Troop, These courses are
designed to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence of leaders to assist them in
providing an effective quality program to the youth. It is suggested that all section
Leaders take this training in their first year, or as soon as possible. Content is set by
Scouts Canada National Council, designed to teach Section leaders the skills required to
work with youth and to administer a section. An Orientation to Scouting course is a
prerequisite to the remaining modules Basic Training. Elements of this training program
are completed through competency based On-the-job-training.
